Potsdam, the capital of the State of Brandenburg, is situated about 20 km south-west of Berlin. The city is best known for the magnificent palaces and parks that date back to its time as the former royal seat of Prussia. Prussian pomp and splendour, a heritage of great architects and scholars, and a focal point during the Cold War: Potsdam offers a unique panorama of culture and history. Its gorgeous setting of historic buildings and UNESCO World Heritage sites like Sanssouci attracts visitors from all over the world every year.
Potsdam, which developed into a centre of science in the 19th century, is today a modern and vibrant city. Three public colleges, the University of Potsdam and more than 40 research institutions contribute to the development of this highly differentiated science region into a research site of international significance. The settlement of future-oriented branches, high-tech centers and research-related companies enhances the knowledge and technology transfer and has made the Potsdam region to one of the most important biotechnology sites in Europe.
